The Story Behind the Story, #3

Today’s WITS “Story Behind the Story” comes from Laura Gamache who taught last year in our pilot program at the Lummi Nation School near Bellingham.

“The first day I was in Janice Hottman’s fourth grade classroom at Lummi Nation School, I asked the kids to write “What Matters?” list poems. Alfonso Billy’s poem went on for three pages, and the things that mattered were wonderfully various and surprising. He even included a line about matter mattering.

I entered Kerry Hermann’s fourth grade classroom at Lummi Nation School, to more enthusiastic greetings and immediate writing engagement from Aly Billy. Even so, it took three weeks for me to realize that Alfonso and Aly are twins.

Every week, both of these poets were curious about what we would be doing, willing to try new ways of writing, and excited to share. I am excited that both Alfonso’s “Golden Eagle” and Aly’s “Recipe for a Gliding Lizard” appear in this year’s WITS-wide anthology.”
