The Story Behind the Story, #4

Wednesday’s entry featured siblings from the Lummi Nation School. Today’s features sisters from Nathan Hale High School! Here’s writer-in-residence Karen Finneyfrock on this dynamic duo: “Emma and Charlotte Newman are sisters. For the second year in a row, we’ve celebrated the end-of-WITS at Nathan Hale High School with a poetry slam. Since poetry slams are for-fun poetry contests, we divide our slam contestants into two teams: Ninth Grade vs. Creative Writing. Student’s names are randomly drawn out of a hat to determine performance order, so imagine the surprise in the audience when Emma and Charlotte were chosen to read back-to-back. Each performed lovely work and the best part of the event was watching the sisters hug and congratulate each other after the reading. Both sisters were selected for the WITS anthology.”
